The China-Egypt Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Renewable Energy (hereinafter referred to as the Joint Laboratory) was initiated in 2015 by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt. The establishment of the Joint Laboratory aims to further implement the important speech spirit of President Xi Jinping at the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. It is a national-level scientific experimental platform approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, based on the scientific and technological needs of China and other countries along the Belt and Road. The Joint Laboratory is committed to providing strong scientific and technological support for the construction of the Belt and Road Innovation Road through pragmatic cooperation between Chinese and Egyptian scientists and the integration of industry, academia, and research.

Relying on the photovoltaic manufacturing equipment and process technology of the 48th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Institute 48"), the Joint Laboratory has established a 6,000-square-meter photovoltaic research and development base in Sohag, Egypt, and built a 1,004-square-meter clean laboratory for solar cell and module production. It is equipped with 86 sets of instruments and equipment, and has successfully developed the first solar cell manufactured in Africa. The Joint Laboratory has trained the first group of Egyptian engineers who master the complete solar cell production process. Currently, the Egyptian side can independently conduct research on solar cell and module technology, leading in Africa.
